Sanaan Goats
The Sanaan Goat is a large, white, to cream colored Goat, Classified as a Milk, Goat Breed. They originated in Switzerland and are now found all over the world.
The Buck Goats (males) average in weight about 190 pounds. Does are slightly smaller.
The Sanaan Doe milk production is high, as compared to other milking goats, but it is lower in Milk Fat, coming in at approx. 3%.
Sannan Goats are described as being, Calm, docile and easy going. Along with their size, their dispositions make them great candidates for Milking, Packing, Driving and about anything else one would want to do with a Goat.
Years ago I was gifted a Sanaan Doe, her name was Dragonfly and she....was a PISTOL! I loved her. She was in mischief often and she was always 'in your pocket' looking for a treat. But she was also a sweetheart pet of mine. She would lean on me as I stroked her head, and sit by me while I was outdoors.
Dragonfly had extra nipples on her two teats, and while I could milk her, it was not really pleasant for she or I. I was not able to keep any of her kids, so when she was gone, that was it for Sanaans for me at the time.
When our 32 year old horse died in 2024, we talked and talked about what we should get for a Pasture Buddy for my, then, 25 year old horse. Finally, we decided on goats. I also decided on Sanaan. But finding the Sanaan, THAT was very surprising how hard.
In the mean time, I bought a couple of doe kids, suppose to be 'part' Sanaan, but I am sure they are just Nigerian Dwarf Goats. I love them, and they are staying, at least for now.... I bought a Boer Does... and I bought another Nigerian Doe, each young maidens.
I did find a Breeder, not too far from where we live that was selling some Sanaan Does. As of 1/2025, I now own 2 of them. They were bred before I picked them up, so we should have kids in the Spring of 2025. One little Doeling will be named Firefly, in honor of Dragonfly.
My two does, Annie and Oakley (not named by me) will be joined soon by two Bucklings, one will be weathered, that I will name Frosty and Snowman. Our two other white doelings are named Ghost and Goblin.
